MADRID, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government announced Tuesday an energy saving plan, which includes slow-down of car speed and promotion of energy-saving lamps.
The plan aims to reduce energy consumption to lessen its oil dependence amid soaring oil prices in the international market, said Miguel Sebastian, minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce.
Sebastian presented 31 measures within the Energy Saving Plan to the Industry, Tourism and Trade Commission of the Congress for 2008-2011.
Energy Saving Plan (2008-2011) will help lift the country's competitiveness, increasing employment and improving the environment, he said.
The government offices will reduce 10 percent on electricity consumption and increase biofuel for official vehicles by 20 percent next year and by 38 percent in 2012, the minister said.
The plan requires that temperatures in government buildings are kept at 26 degrees centigrade in summer and 21 degrees centigrade in winter.
The plan suggest to reduce vehicles speed by 20 percent in big cities. The government will grant 49 million euros to promote energy-saving lamps, to ensure that each home will have at least one energy-saving lamp in 2009 and two in 2010, Sebastian said.
The government seeks to have 1 million electrical and hybrid vehicles in 2014 to substantially reduce hydrocarbon consumption.
