DMEA members should receive a coupon in their mail for six free Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) by Aug. 11.
“We began mailing the coupons in early July, but we’re mailing out the coupons in waves rather than all at once,” said DMEA energy services supervisor Phil Zimmer. “We’re trying to ensure a sufficient inventory of all the available choices of CFLs and make the process work as smoothly as possible. We appreciate our members’ patience and their participation in this campaign to help us reduce the co-op’s wholesale power cost as well as save energy and money themselves.”
DMEA also asks that members receiving coupons and free CFLs take the ENERGY STAR “Change a Light” pledge. A link to the ENERGY STAR website is available on DMEA’s home page, www.dmea.com, as is other CFL promotion and educational material.
The ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs that DMEA is giving its residential members reduce electricity used for lighting by 75 percent, compared to the inefficient incandescent light bulbs in most people’s homes.
By reducing the amount of wholesale electricity DMEA has to buy during expensive “peak” periods, the CFLs could save DMEA more than the bulbs cost, paying for themselves in wholesale power savings in one to two years, according to DMEA’s energy analysis. Provided that the 100,000 CFL’s are placed in sockets and replace incandescent bulbs normally “on” for the national average of 3.5 hours per day, DMEA estimates its membership will use 7.665 million kilowatt hours (kWhs) less than they would have with the inefficient lights.
Residential members who do not receive a coupon for six free CFLs in the mail by Aug. 11 should call DMEA at 249-4572 or 874-8081.
