Consumer Advisory - Globe Mini-Spiral 13-watt bulb
[2008-09-03]

The Department of Government Services is advising consumers of an information bulletin that has been issued pertaining to the Globe Mini-Spiral 13-watt bulb due to potential fire and electric shock hazards.

Consumers are urged to check any energy efficient bulbs in their homes for the bulb, marked "Globe Mini-Spiral, 13 W, 120V, 60 Hz, 225mA." Underwriters Laboratories, an independent organization which tests products for safety, is recommending that consumers stop using the bulbs and return them to the point of purchase.

The bulbs carry an unauthorized UL certification marking, and the non-UL compliant parts can fail, posing a fire and electrical hazard. Two fire-related cases have been reported in Alberta due to this problem, and the Alberta government has issued their own advisory to residents.

The Department of Government Services has received a number of calls from concerned consumers since the Alberta advisory was issued. The Globe Mini-Spiral 13-watt bulbs are energy efficient bulbs that look unlike the domestic 40, 60 or 100 watt bulbs. As the name suggests, they are shaped like a spiral.

The bulbs were manufactured from January 2002 through April 2003 and may have date codes BH012 through BH163 or BH0102 through BH1603. They also bear the unauthorized UL mark with the file number E197131.
